The NYC Department of Environmental Protection recently enacted regulations for dry cleaners. These regulations require stores to display a sign that lists all chemicals they use to clean customers’ clothes.
It’s a smart move. Customer today are more health-conscious than ever, and we want to make informed decisions about what kinds of chemicals we’re putting in our bodies.

Most dry cleaners use a chemical called “Perc.” While the health risks it causes for the consumer are not yet clear, Perc is known to be hazardous to those who are exposed at high levels, such as dry cleaning employees. With all the snow we’ve had this year, there is a lot of de-icing salt on the roads and sidewalks. It’s easy to track salt onto your clothes, especially the cuffs of your pants. But don’t let it sit! If left untreated, salt can dull the colors of your garments and leave unsightly stains.
If you do end up with salt stains on your clothes, here’s a few tips for dealing with them:
For weather-proof items– coats, snow boots, etc.– mix water with a little bit of vinegar (1 tbsp. vinegar to 1 quart water), and dip a soft cloth in the mixture. Gently scrub the affected area clean with this cloth, and you’ll see the stains get cleared away.
For other items, don’t just throw them in the washer! Let the stain dry, and then use a cheap hairbrush (or anything with soft bristles) to wipe off the granules of salt.
